Referring to MS based games. Personally I think installers are a waste of time and fail. They are a waste of time. The only practical use I can think of is to register the files but a batch file could easily be made to do this right? Is there really any reason to have an installer for your game? Or is it just something people do to look fancy? |

It automates the install process, allows a chance for the user to view and approve the EULA, registers any files (and ensures users are not missing any) and provides a standard that you can expect all users to have a similar setup. |

Well if you have to register the files, theres a good chance you'll be needing to move them into the system32 folder, checking if a newer version of the file exists, etc. |

automatically putting the game in it's own program folder, registering it with the windows program folder view, adding icons to the desktop... The list goes on and on about why it's better to use an installer. |

Installers are great when you have an audience who are new to the indy game scene. |
