So you can make some falling blocks, check when they're stacked up. Great work! Doing Tetris, we worked on taking input, drawing on the screen, and handling a very simple collision detection system. It's a start! The next thing we're going to make is Break Out. I want it as close to the real thing as possible, and I want two game modes: Classic mode, which is traditional Break Out, and Arcade mode, which has at least one unique feature to it. Challenge yourself! Breakout will help us learn to make some better physics, and do a different style of game. The game we'll make will be a lot harder, so pick a suitable challenge for this one! |

If I'm correct, it's where you have a few rows of blocks at the top, and you bounce a ball off of a pong paddle, and you try to break all the blocks before time runs out. I think.. Lol. |

Bleh, I wrote a big post about how the game works, only to find out at the very end when looking for pictures that I had explained the wrong game... "Breakout" is commonly called "Paddle" or something like that. You have a platform that you can move from side to side and you try and stop the ball from getting past you. The ball goes into the air and hits bricks up there that disappear when hit enough (and you get points). You beat the level by removing all the bricks. I have to say that it is the second most popular cell phone game, with tetris taking the first spot. Anyway, my suggestion now is that game where you fire bubbles at angles and try to line up three of the same color in a row. I like that game, and it would be very hard to do (because it involves angles). PS. I made a game for computer class once. If anybody would like my version of "Slime Soccer" made in Java, I'll post a link to it. The best part about my version is the ease of changing the settings, allowing you to do hilarious things. My favorite example is when I changed the jump speed to 1 and slime gravity to 0 so that both slimes would slowly float into the air while trying to keep the ball out of their area until they both go past the screen and wait to see which side the ball will come flying down and land on. |

Never heard of it being called "Break-out" but here in good ol' England I think I used to play the game. It was on an old BBC Acorn (where I first got into programming)... which was the computer I had for ages. I only first went on a Windows PC when it was just going from '98 to 2000. Good times... It started with an 'A'... can't remember the name =( Ill boot up my Acorn and try and find the floppy. Wow... I made a 3 disk text based RPG in QBasic when I was 10 xD I even managed to draw Ash (from pockemon)'s face using the old 'Draw 130, 100' and 'Move 20,40' etc. Took me hours. Used to have to buy pads of graph paper to prepare it xD T'was an awesome game! "Final Hearts". ~Kite |
